Along the Way

I have written nonfiction pieces and was satisfied with the work in the end, but it never seemed enough. Somehow, it was less fulfilling.

As I am currently immersed in the writing of book two of my most recent trilogy, I find myself reflecting on the profound journey that unfolds not only for my characters but also within myself. It’s fascinating to observe how, as my characters undergo their transformations and development, I too experience a parallel evolution. This process of writing is not merely an act of putting words on a page; it is cathartic, truly liberating in ways I had not fully appreciated before. The act of creating a narrative allows me to explore emotions, ideas, and experiences that resonate deeply within me. Each character I craft is a unique reflection of different facets of my own psyche, and as they navigate their challenges and triumphs, I feel a sense of liberation wash over me.

The Personal Journey of Creation

The creative process is a deeply personal journey, as unique to each individual as the characters that populate the pages of my work. Just as each character possesses their own distinct personality, motivations, and arcs, so too does the creative journey differ from one writer to another. As my protagonist embarks on her quest for freedom and self-discovery, I find that her journey resonates with my own. With every step she takes towards liberation, I experience a sense of empowerment and enlightenment. It’s as if her victories are my victories, and her struggles mirror my own, allowing me to confront and process my feelings in a safe and imaginative space.

The Interplay Between Author and Character

This dynamic creates a fascinating interplay between author and character, where the lines of influence blur. The author creates the character, who in turn helps the author navigate their own emotions and experiences. It is a symbiotic relationship of sorts, akin to the bond between a parent and child. Just as a parent nurtures and raises their child with the hope that the child will grow to care for them in return, so too do I nurture my characters, hoping that they will offer me insights and growth in return.

The Power of Storytelling

As I delve deeper into the narrative, I am continually reminded of the power of storytelling—not just as a means of entertainment, but as a transformative experience that can lead to personal growth. The exploration of themes such as freedom, identity, and resilience within my characters serves as a mirror, reflecting my own journey and encouraging me to embrace new possibilities within my craft. Each word I write is a step toward greater understanding, both of myself and of the complex world around me. Through this intricate dance of creation, I discover not only who my characters are, but also who I am becoming in the process. The act of writing becomes a shared journey, where both author and character evolve together, shaping one another in profound and unexpected ways.
